Brooks/Rust: "Johnson was the first successful black recording artist and this was his signature song, which he recorded for numerous companies beginning in 1890. Some evidence suggests that at least one take may be by Cal Stewart. Col (UK) listed Stewart as the artist on its 1907 release (D4), Chmura also credits Stewart. However all of the many copies found in the U.S. have been by Johnson (no English pressings have been found.)" |
