  • Description: String quartet
  • Instrumentation: 2 violins, viola, and cello
  • Category: Instrumental
  • Master Size: 12-in.
  • Title Note: After the mid-1990s, Hindemith’s op. 22 became known as Quartet no. 4. The Victor disc label identifies it as his third quartet, based on numbering assigned by music publisher B. Schott’s Söhne. Schott’s numbering was generally accepted until the discovery of the unnumbered “String quartet in C, op. 2” that became recognized as Hindemith’s first quartet. Consequently his later string quartets were renumbered.
