Charles O'Connell (session supervisor)
  • Description: Orchestra
  • Instrumentation: 8 first violins, 6 second violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos, 3 basses, 4 flutes, 3 oboes, 4 bassoons, 3 clarinets, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 8 horns, tuba, harp, traps, and tympani
  • Category: Instrumental
  • Master Size: 12-in.
  • Title Note: Take 2 of this master is a 1939 remake of CS-94629 and is issued as Part 9 of later releases of Victor albums, M-508 and DM-508 ("Tristan and Isolde"). Stokowski and the orchestra re-made Part 9, replacing the finale from Act 2 with the ending of “Liebestod” that was previously recorded on CSHQ-72075 and issued as M-154 ("Tristan und Isolde: A symphonic synthesis"). The Stokowski website speculates that the replacement finale was in response to the public’s desire to include the popular “Liebestod” excerpt in the later album. As noted in the Stokowski.org website, Victor assigned the matrix number of the new Part 9 master as CS-72075, rather than CS-94629.
Notes
Victor ledgers: "Present—Mr. Charles O'Connell."
Ledgers indicate that later issues of Victor 15206 and Victor 16233 derive from a second take of this master, made 4/20/1939 and identified as CS-72075; early issues of Vi 15206 and 16233 are from CS-94629-1, made 12/16/1935. While the earlier issues are released as single sides, later issues are paired with "Adoramus te" (D3RC-410).
The Victor blue history card indicates that issues 7624 and 7628 derive from this matrix; the 1932 Victor catalog states that discs 7624 and 7625 contain part 8 of the set.
