The collection of 78rpm recordings at UCSB is an invaluable aid in editing the Discography of American Historical Recordings. Labels are routinely consulted, as label copy often differs from such original source materials as ledgers and catalogs. Of particular interest are early recordings and ethnic and foreign discs. Some of the recordings we are looking for include:
- All Berliner discs
- All 7" discs on Columbia, Victor, and other labels
- All Victor 8" discs
- Victor and Columbia 14" discs
- All Chinese, Japanese, or Korean discs on Columbia or Victor
- All Latin American discs on Columbia or Victor
- Victor ethnic and foreign discs (some in the 60,000s, 70,000s, 80,000s, 90,000s)
- Victor V- series discs
- Columbia discs with B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, X, Y or two-letter prefixes
- Columbia discs with -X and -F suffixes
Outside the scope of the discography, but sought for the archive's collection, are the following types of recordings:
- Early Mexican/Latin American discs
- Indian, South Asian, and Southeast Asian discs
- Greek, Turkish, and Arabic discs
- Early Chinese, Japanese, and Korean discs
- Pre-revolution Russian and Soviet discs
- Acoustic-era (pre-1925) Continental European and British discs
- American country & western
- Early American jazz and blues recordings

Record catalogs, particularly monthly supplements, ethnic catalogs, and numerical catalogs, are extremely important tools in the editorial process. If you have record company catalogs, please contact the Project Director.
